When faced with the ugly statistic that, according
to the American Cancer Society, 438,000 Americans die each year as a
result of illnesses related to cigarette smoking, the Troy Junior High
YFJ team decided to educate their peers about the dangers of this
habit. Peer pressure becomes a big player in influencing students to
smoke. This YFJ team found that at their school, students are affected
because their peers smoke and encourage others to smoke as well.
The YFJ team members discussed different ways they
could bring the awareness of smoking dangers to their peers. Using a
variety of mediums such as posters, flyers, and presentations, the team
members took their anti-smoking message to their fellow students. They
developed a PowerPoint presentation which showed the results of being a
cigarette smoker, how difficult it is to quit smoking, how to avoid peer
pressure, and the dangers of second-hand smoke. The team members gave
this presentation to approximately 140 students in their school. After
the presentation, the YFJ team distributed fliers that contained
statistics on the amount of money one would spend on the smoking habit
over a shortened lifetime. The group wrote an article to be included in
the school’s parent newsletter that detailed how to tell if your student
is smoking. |
