The Youth for Justice Team at Glen Este Middle
School noticed a problem affecting their lunch hours: messy lunch lines.
The students identified the source of the problem as fellow students who
allowed their friends to “cut” in line, forcing the students in line
behind them to wait longer in line to receive their lunch. Some
students, rather than fighting the line jumpers, choose to sit patiently
until the line has gone down. Either way, because of students who decide
not to follow the rules, the entire student body has to wait longer to
get their lunch, leaving them with less time to eat.
After much discussion, the team decided to
implement a system involving retractable belts. These belts would keep
the lines straight and orderly, and prevent students who would want to
line-jump. The team spoke with their school’s principal, teachers, and
janitorial staff, all of whom agreed to help with setting up and taking
down the belts during lunch periods. The YFJ team contacted several
companies, explaining their problem, and requested assistance. They
received an offer from ALVARADO, a company that makes and sells the
retractable belt systems, which would cover 80% of the costs. The YFJ
team then worked together to raise the rest of the funds for the belt
system. This system has helped to keep order in the lunch room. Thanks
to the efforts of the Glen Este YFJ team and the cooperation and support
of the school’s staff, messy lunch lines won’t be a problem any longer. |
