Felicity-Franklin Middle School Team 3
Actions Before Reactions
When students see their older siblings, peers, and friends, who are supposed to be role models, engaging in behavior such as fighting and drug use, they may think that this is acceptable behavior.  The YFJ team from Felicity Franklin Middle School wants to present younger children with positive examples.  Students who solve their problems through fighting are more at risk for injury, and also tend to continue fighting to solve their problems.  The team conducted a survey which indicated that three-quarters of the students interviewed had witnessed or been involved in a fight in the past.

Among the solutions this team proposed to put an end to fighting include getting more students involved in sports and other activities, so they will have a healthy outlet for their frustrations.  Sports also give kids a sense of discipline and a good model for behavior.  Another solution was for kids to discuss their issues with a parent or other adult, so that the student knows that there are people who will listen to their concerns.  The team also suggested that the two parties who had issues with each other should be able to talk to one another to resolve their issues using communication, rather than physical altercations.  To help promote these ideas, the YFJ team created a brochure to help spread the work to their peers.
