Session Title: Building a
Civil Rights Movement in the New Millennium

Vivian
Session Description:
Rev. Dr. C.T. Vivian is a clergyman, long time activist, and a true
hero of the civil rights movement. A personal friend and
colleague of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Vivian draws on the
history of the civil rights movement as he lays out a new
thinking for a new century. Rev. Vivian will also discuss how
to engage students in a new civil rights movement.

Session Title: The New
“Juan Crow” Laws: Poverty, Inequality, and Social Justice in the
Immigrant Community
Presenter: Joseph Mas,
Esq.
Session Description:
The Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution gives the federal
government exclusive jurisdiction over immigration. Following
the Immigration Reform Act of 1994, initiatives at the state
level have pushed “English Only” laws and denied undocumented
immigrants driver’s licenses and enrollment in state supported
college and universities. This session will examine
contemporary parallels to the Jim Crow era and consider the
impact on the civil and human rights of the undocumented.

the Classroom

Session Description: In
this session, participants will gain a deeper understanding of
African Americans’ relationship to the law via the Ohio
Historical Society’s collections. Participants in this session
will create and exhibit panels using the primary sources
provided and learn new ways to incorporate primary sources into
their classrooms. All participants will receive a CD-ROM that
includes digital reproductions of the resources used during the
session.

Session Description:
Come join fellow conference attendees to discuss and brainstorm
teaching strategies based on the content from the plenary and
breakout sessions. Share your thoughts with, as well as learn
from, your colleagues on how best to teach all the new
information you just acquired. This informal session will
provide for a seamless transition of knowledge from the
conference to the classroom.
Standards: This session provides a variety of
resources and teaching strategies for use in classrooms. The
resources/strategies can be aligned to all standards at all
grade levels
Session Title: Fighting For Freedom: The Story of the United States Colored
Troops

Session Description:
The war between the North and the South steps out of the pages
of your history book and into your classroom. This program,
centering on the African American contributions to the war,
teaches the basics of the American conflict; who was involved;
where the war took place; what was used in the war and why the
war started. Learn what made the United States Colored Troops
different and what they accomplished by fighting in the Civil
War. This program will emphasize the effects on the government,
laws, and the Constitution. The Civil war soldier will enhance
your curriculum with many visual aids that make history come
alive.
