Supreme Court Summer Institute
Street Law, Inc. and the Supreme Court Historical Society will sponsor two sessions of the annual Supreme Court Summer Institute, June 14-19 and June 21-26, 2012. The Institute is open to secondary level social studies teachers & supervisors, who will spend five stimulating days on Capitol Hill and inside the Supreme Court learning about the Court, its past and current cases, and how to teach about them from top Supreme Court litigators & educators.  Attendees will also be in the Court to hear the Justices announce the final decisions of the term and attend a private reception at the Court.  For full information and to apply online (under the “Registration Info” tab), go to www.streetlaw.org/scsi_apply. Constitutional Rights Foundation 3rd Annual First Amendment Cartoon Contest
Encourage students to exercise their creativity by entering the First Amendment Cartoon Contest.

The theme of this year’s contest is Free Expression through the “rights of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” These rights are particularly significant in this an era of protest both in the United States and around the world. iCivics

iCivics (formerly Our Courts) is a web-based education project designed to teach students civics and inspire them to be active participants in our democracy. iCivics is the vision of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who is concerned that students are not getting the information and tools they need for civic participation, and that civics teachers need better materials and support.  www.icivics.org

The National Archives DocsTeach website is designed to help teachers use primary resources in their classrooms. The site has more than 3,000 primary documents available to view and print. The Library of Congress "Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) Direct"
The Library of Congress has an online resource for educators – “Teaching with Primary Sources Direct.” TPS Direct enables educators to integrate primary sources into their classrooms by creating customized lesson plans based on documents and artifacts from the Library’s extensive collections. Applicable across grade levels and content areas, this project allows educators to search the TPS database for content-rich activities.

Teachers: Looking for “teachable moments” to grab your students’ attention and enhance their learning?  TeachableMoment.Org provides educators with timely teaching ideas to encourage critical thinking on issues of the day and foster a positive classroom environment. It is a project of Morningside Center for Teaching Social Responsibility (formerly Educators for Social Responsibility Metropolitan Area).

Topical activities are available for elementary school, middle school, and high school levels.
