Law and Citizenship Conference News Release

Lanzinger, Osterud to Receive Ohio Center for Law-Related Education Highest Honors

COLUMBUS (Sept. 14, 2016) – The Ohio Center for Law-Related Education (OCLRE) will present its two highest honors—the Eiler Award for Mock Trial Coaching Excellence and the Founders’ Award—at the 26th annual Law & Citizenship Conference on Monday, Sept. 19 in Columbus.

Supreme Court of Ohio Justice Judith Ann Lanzinger is the recipient of the 2016 Founders’ Award. Justice Lanzinger is committed to enhancing public understanding of the judicial system. She has been particularly supportive of civic education, and in 2010 she launched her “Justice Judy” blog in an effort to engage an increasingly tech-savvy population of young people in understanding the purpose and function of our laws and courts. Justice Lanzinger has been elected to serve at each level of the state judiciary, and has served as a judge or justice for more than 30 years.

“Justice Lanzinger is a very deserving recipient of the OCLRE Founders’ Award,” said Kate Strickland, OCLRE executive director. “As readers of her ‘Justice Judy’ blog know, she is committed to providing meaningful and accessible information to the public, and she encourages questions and provides a space for civil public discourse.”

Judge S. Dwight Osterud, Perrysburg Municipal Court (retired), is the recipient of the 2016 Eiler Award. Judge Osterud started the Perrysburg Court Law & Government Explorer Post in 2001. Since that time, as a part of his efforts to instill in young people an understanding of and appreciation for the law and justice system, Judge Osterud has coached the Post’s mock trial team. “Judge O,” as he is affectionately known to students, strikes the balance of having “…created a competitive though friendly atmosphere… allow[ing] participants to see the court as a tool for justice as opposed to a place to be feared,” according to Perrysburg alumnus and fellow coach Russell Quick.

OCLRE is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization whose goal is to improve society by developing citizens empowered with an understanding of our democratic system.  OCLRE is sponsored by the Supreme Court of Ohio, Ohio Attorney General, Ohio State Bar Association and American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio Foundation.  OCLRE programs are funded in part by a grant from the Ohio State Bar Foundation.
