Experience a unique opportunity for Ohio elementary, middle, or high school social studies educators who teach government, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

The We the People summer institute is a week-long professional development program on the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. Participants take part in lectures and discussions on constitutional themes.  Participants will better understand how to use simulated Congressional hearings, as a teaching tool and as an authentic performance assessment.  Experienced teacher mentors assist participants in discussing the challenges of teaching civic education.

Participants will receive at no cost:
Instruction by nationally known constitutional scholars
Pedagogy sessions with We the People mentors
A library of Constitutional literature  (valued approximately $100)

A classroom set of textbooks and other materials for classroom use (valued approximately $450
Lodging and meals

For a fee, participants can earn three graduate credit hours through Indiana University

Topics to be addressed include:

  • What Are the Historical and Philosophical Foundations of the American Political System?

  • How Did the Framers Create the Constitution?

  • How Has the Constitution Been Changed to Further the Ideals Contained in the Declaration of Independence?

  • How Have the Values and Principals Embodied in the Constitution Shaped American Institutions and Practices?

  • What Rights Does the Bill of Rights Protect?

  • What Challenges Might Face the American Constitutional Democracy in the 21st Century?
