Session Description:
RIGHT (Recognizing Individuals Greatness in Historical
Testament) promotes the development of community partnerships in
naming public properties that is more reflective of diversity.
Honoring and memorializing the service of people historically
excluded from ownership identity should merit greater inclusion
in the process of naming public property. The exploration of
Dr. King’s “ownership identity” along with that of the Randolph
freedmen, Ohio’s early black setters of the Upper Miami Valley
will be examined.

Session Title: Telling the
Civil Rights Story Through Multimedia

Session Description:
Teachers will discover how their students can use music, primary
source documents, and photos to tell the Civil Rights stories to
teach themselves and other classmates about the movement.
Teachers will see how using photo story in the classroom can
help the students teach each other about the Civil Rights
Movement by learning about it themselves. Students research
various aspects of the movement and then put together a
documentary including pictures, primary source documents, and
music of the time to present to their class.

Identifying Quality Materials for the Social Studies Classroom

Session Description:
The purpose of this session will be to explore the bank of
resources and services available to Ohio Social Studies
educators by the Ohio Social Studies Resource Center (OSSRC).
The OSSRC was created in 2003 and has been growing and evolving
since. Twelve Ohio Social Studies Related Agencies, including
the OCLRE, collaboratively worked to build the foundation of
this center with the ambition of helping Ohio Social Studies
teachers.
Standards: This session provides a variety of
resources for use in classrooms. The resources can be aligned
to all standards at all grade levels

Participants will discuss contemporary slavery on a global,

trafficking, and contemporary slavery in Ohio are highlighted in
this session.

The law governing the administration of American elections has
been the focus of considerable attention since the contested
election of 2000. Yet, despite the passage of the Help America
Vote Act of 2002 (“HAVA”) and related state laws, election
reform remains a work in progress. This session will examine
recent election law dispute and current disputes, including
litigation, during the 2008 election season.

cartoons using the cartoon collection from the Ohio Historical
Society. Participants in this session will learn the
intricacies of working with historic cartoons, as well as learn
new ways to incorporate primary sources into their classrooms.
All participants will receive a CD-ROM that includes digital
reproductions of the resources used during the session.
